BARIATRIC SURGERY & PROCEDURES
Various bariatric surgery & procedures are now available that can help you finally maintain a healthy weight after dealing with eating and weight issues. Each procedure is slightly different from the other based on the levels of complexity working with your stomach. But you should know a little about each one so you can have a head-start in determining which procedure is appropriate for your life.

All of these procedures can be done here at Desert Surgical & Bariatric Specialists by Dr. Ramy Awad.

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery

This procedure is the safest and easiest of any available. The reason is because no open surgery is necessary. However, several incisions have to be made in the abdomen in order to send a small camera into your body to look at your internal organs. Using a laparoscopic tube, the stomach is then divided into essentially two pouches to allow for less food absorption. Through this malabsorption process, you can finally lose weight. And you don’t have to worry about as many potentials for scars.

You’ve likely heard about this bariatric surgery being done on high-profile clients like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. Along with gastric bypass, it’s also one of the easiest procedures and actually takes less time than any other option. All that’s involved is placing an adjustable band around your stomach so your stomach won’t hold the amount of food it used to.

Done on an outpatient basis, adjustments can be made at any time as well as eliminating the band completely if you so choose. The appeal of the latter option may make you want to consider LAP-BAND if your body mass index is currently over 30 and you plan to maintain a moderated, healthy diet.

This option has a number of good options that could make it your top choice. The biggest selling point is you can lose weight faster with a sleeve gastrectomy. As well, there isn’t any need for adjustments because the procedure is permanent. It basically reduces your stomach by 25% so you’ll only eat as much as your stomach can hold.

Not having it reversible can also be a detriment, so think seriously before committing to having a gastrectomy done. Overall, you won’t have to worry about malabsorption as you would with gastric surgery, which in turn decreases the amount of time in losing weight.

Other Bariatric Surgeries Available

Laparoscopic procedures have decreased any need for large incisions or long recovery times. And with this system, you can have other bariatric surgeries easier done that used to be much more complicated. For instance, gallbladder removal has been made easier through a laparoscopic tube. The same applies to hernia removal and removal of diseased portions of the colon.
More complex bariatric surgeries are available using the same means.
